NON NATIVE NATIVE (NNN) is a design and research initiative based in Amsterdam. We explore the subject of cultural/national/political identity and contemporary migration, expanding the possibility of a cross-disciplinary co-production with other fields of expertise such as social science and journalism. NNN projects are made up of visual research, documentary film, and public events, displaying personal explorations of the shifting political and social realities. In 2019 the initiative launched its public program NNN EMBASSY with an aim to extend the international, non-western discourses within the cultural landscape. The initiative is founded by Belle Phromchanya, operates in collaboration with diverse professionals to celebrate the art of reclaiming the unclaimed.
Born in Bangkok, Thailand in 1984, Phromchanya was trained as a graphic designer before relocating to Amsterdam in 2011 to study a Master in Design at the Sandberg Instituut, Gerrit Rietveld Academie. Along with her practice as designer/researcher under the moniker Non Native Native, she is also a co-founder of ACED: an institute for design, art, and journalism, and a guest lecturer for BA and MA programs at various art academies.

CAPITAL OF MAE LA
A short documentary film offering a modern story of one of the longest-running refugee camps in the world and its inhabitants. The project is an ethnographic andartistic collaboration. In 2014, I followed my friend, Jiraporn, (an anthropologist working on her Ph.D.) to the Mae La refugee camp along the border of Thailand and Myanmar. Interestingly, the camp has been a home for over 40,000 refugees for more than 30 years ... ︎
